Repurposing Bakhtin’s concept from literature to the biennial, and further applying it to the globalized biennial network, goes beyond a localized chronotope to the notion of a distributed chronotope. This intersection of axes and fusion of indicators characterizes the artistic chronotope. Time, as it were, thickens, takes on flesh, becomes artistically visible likewise, space becomes charged and responsive to the movements of time, plot and history.

From a handful in the 1990s (such the Whitney Biennial and Venice Biennale) to the large number today (Istanbul, Havana, Bucharest, São Paolo, Gwangju, Chengdu, Sharjah, and a host of others), the biennial format has spread to become a global phenomenon.
